Expert Insights from CMC Rope Rescue Instructors - Matthew Scharper's Journey to Teaching

With over 20 years of experience in law enforcement and search and rescue, Matthew has developed a deep understanding of the importance of effective communication and teamwork in high-pressure situations.

As someone who has worked extensively in search and rescue, Matthew has seen firsthand the impact that fear and uncertainty can have on people's lives. 'When somebody is basically hanging on to the edge of their life, you cannot question what you are doing,' he notes. This insight has driven his passion for teaching rope rescue techniques and helping others overcome their fears.

Matthew's journey in rope rescue began when he was still in high school, volunteering with a search and rescue team in Mariposa County, CA. From there, he went on to work as a 'Gun Toter' and Search and Rescue Coordinator for the Mariposa Sheriff's department, covering 58 counties across the state.

In his current role as an instructor at CMC Rope Rescue, Matthew draws on his extensive experience to teach students how to overcome their fears and develop new skills. 'I really enjoy what we do in this, which is help people overcome those fears and kind of open up new things in their lives,' he says.

Matthew's expertise has also led him to contribute to the growth and history of the International Technical Rescue Symposium (ITRS), where he emphasizes the importance of caving influence. 'That caving influence in ITRS is vital to the growth and vital to the history,' he notes.

One of Matthew's key takeaways for students is the need to consider what they're willing to stop learning when adopting new techniques. 'If you're going to pick up a new technique, you need to consider what you're going to stop learning if you're going to learn a new one,' he advises.

Finally, Matthew stresses the importance of considering individual risk profiles and adapting training accordingly. 'Their risk profile is different than yours, so maybe don't adopt their practices,' he cautions.
